The question “What is Truth?” has been a long standing question. It goes much deeper than telling a lie or non-truth. It really defines what we perceive as reality. So figuring out “truth” is essentially figuring out reality.
What is Reality?
Have you, even once in your life, realized that something that you thought was reality wasn’t what you originally thought. So, all of a sudden, something you thought to be truth was actually false. Then, you have to ask yourself, what is reality or what is truth? Because what you believe to be true today you might find out tomorrow that it is false. In essence, you were living a false reality. Basically, a false reality is a lie. How is that possible? Well, because we live in a fallen world of lies and deception. Those lies and deceptions can closely, but not exactly, match the truth thus fooling even the most aware.
Answers to my Prayer.
I want to share with you an answer to prayer that I prayed that deals with truth. In January of this year I found myself in a state of confusion. It all stemmed from the 2020 presidential election. It doesn’t matter who you voted for but rather what each administration was saying. They were both claiming something totally opposite from each other. Not only were they causing confusion, but so was the news. The news sources I watched didn’t agree either and were adding to the confusion. In early January 2021, I went to bed and I prayed to God to reveal the truth to me. I was reminded in my sleep that Jesus had said, “I am the way, the truth and the life…. “. I actually was a bit disappointed with that answer, and I argued with God. I said “I know that verse, I’ve read it in the Bible I don’t know how many times. I want the truth of what’s going on today”. I went to bed the second night praying the same prayer and I was reminded during the night the following, “God’s grace is sufficient for me”. Again, I wasn’t satisfied with that answer, and I argued with God with attitude for the second night in a row. The third night I went to bed with the same prayer God reminded me with a bit of attuned, “ you do realize the fact that we live in a fallen world ran by the father of lies and deception, don’t you?. Wow! It all came rushing together with that answer. God was probably laughing at me the entire time because I was totally familiar with each of those verses but I had never connected the dots before. Everything became clear to me and on the fourth night I humbly went to God and apologized for arguing with Him and not trusting Him and asked for His forgiveness. I also asked what else should I know that I don’t. The fourth night, even though I hadn’t prayed for another answer, God reminded me to just have faith, that everything would be alright.
So, What is Truth?
That brings me back to the question “What is the truth”? Well, Jesus said in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me”.
John 14:6 Jesus said, "...I am the Truth..."
Jesus said He’s the truth. That means that you don’t have your own truth and I don’t have my own truth. Why, because we are not Jesus. I submit a simple definition drawn from teachings in the Holy Bible is a good place to find the definition of truth. After all, Jesus said “…I am the Truth…”. So, truth is that which is consistent with the mind, will, character, glory, and being of God. And, even more to the point: truth is the self-expression of God. If you are not aware, Jesus is synonymous with God. Like I mentioned previously, that is the biblical meaning of truth. When you look at truth this way, it’s the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. What has always been true will always be true. The trend that you can have your own truth and so can everybody else, in reality is not the case. It’s just that whoever believes that they can have their own truth more than likely doesn’t believe in God or maybe that they themselves are God. Or is ignorant of who God is and the power He wields. According to John MacArthur, in the book titled “The Truth War”. He said, “After thousands of years, the very best of human philosophers have all utterly failed to account for truth and the origin of human knowledge apart from God. In fact, the one most valuable lesson humanity ought to have learned from philosophy is that it is impossible to make sense of truth without acknowledging God as the necessary starting point”.
Do you Know the Truth?
I know, or can imagine, many of you have never thought about “truth” this way. To me, it brings a whole new meaning to what is and what is not reality. In other words, what is true and what is not true. You can bet your bottom dollar, that if it’s not true, but rather a lie, it’s not of God. And, if you know the Truth you also know God.
