The Power of Your Testimony!

The last time I posted I wrote about how I was informed how the negative consequences of my testimony could be harmful and I shouldn’t feel so free to share. What I find interesting is that of the 10,000+ people I’ve shared my testimony with, this particular individual is in the vast minority. In fact, it brings the total who didn’t agree with what I shared or just didn't want to hear my testimony to a whopping 12 individuals. You do the math, 10,000+ for , or 12 against and also compare what God tells us to do about sharing. It’s a no brainer and I’ll continue to share at every opportunity I get. Ironically just down the road a mere 98 miles from Afton, WY is a small town called Kemmerer, WY. It's a windy, mountainous and scenic drive to Kemmerer. Kemmerer is actually off of the route we choose but not by much. And it was worth the side trip because it has the very first JC Penny ever opened and it is still doing business. As you can imagine, that caught Kim’s attention so it definitely called for a detour. When we arrived in Kemmerer, it didn’t take long to spot the JC Penny store because it was on the main thoroughfare through town. Now imagine what I’m driving, a 30 foot motor home, pulling a four door jeep that has a trike carrier hanging from the hitch. In essence I have a small train and finding parking that will accommodate our needs isn’t usually a simple task. As it turned out, JC Penny in Kemmerer besides being on the main street through town also was next to a one way street with a whole block of parallel parking that was totally free of cars just waiting for us. Kim walked across the street and into the store before I joined her. I needed to get something to drink and stretch my legs a bit before I joined her in “shopping paradise”. As I gathered my courage I exited the motor home and J-walked across the street, it was so busy, to JC Penny and bravely opened the front door to the past. I immediately was taken to my childhood at about age 5-6 to a store in Grangeville, ID. I didn’t even know I remembered that store until I entered this store. It was full of historical pictures and even had the pulleys and cables still in place to take money from the cash register to the manager in an upstairs room. I also learned that prior to being named JC Penny, the chain of stores were called, “Golden Rule”. The owner’s name was James Clay Penny and the board of directors voted against him to change the name to JC Penny. I also saw Kim immediately and she was surprised I decided to come in and started telling me all about the store and how this lady that worked there was explaining this and that and had taken her picture under the JC Penny sign and that it was just so cool. I have to admit, it was actually very cool and it definitely took me a step back in time. I recommend visiting if you ever find yourself near Kemmerer, WY. Tell Penny that Von and Kim recommended the store.

Oh yeah, who’s Penny. Penny is the lady that Kim told me about that showed and told her about the store. Penny is not JC Penny or any relation. Penny had told Kim that a friend, Matt, of her cousin had just had a stroke a few days beforehand and that opened the door for Kim to share a little of our testimony. Once I arrived in the store Penny retook the picture in the store with both of us and even took us outside to get a picture of the store front. Penny was amazed at how well I was getting around and we just started talking as Kim browsed the store. I talked about the night I had the Stroke and how God literally talked to me. Hoe He told me three things, that I’d be alright, showed be a “video” of what was going on with me and some of the things I’d go through, and that a lot of people would come to Him because of my testimony and the things I go through. I also told her about the day after the stroke were I totally submitted to God and told Him that I’m all His and at the same time I ran to Jesus’s arms to gather His strength because I knew I wasn’t strong enough to deal with the stroke on my own.

It never ceases to amaze me how Holy Spirit grabs people and it is so clear by their facial expressions and body language. It’s as if they a mesmerized with Him. When I finished she asked if she could share what just happened to her just the day before. She went I’m on to tell me that she had picked up her 4 year old grandson and was driving him to her house. She was heading down hill on a side street with a stop sign at the bottom where it connected to a main street. When she pressed the brake to slow down and then stop she didn’t have any brakes. She pumped them but it didn’t matter, she didn’t slow down but picked up speed. She said, get behind me legion, get behind me legion over and over as the stop sign got closer and close the with the realization that she wasn’t going to stop she asked God for help. As she reached the stop sign she turned the steering wheel sharply and barreled around the corner and eventually came to a safe stop with no accident or anybody hurt. She said, “I believe God is with us and protects us”. I said, “Absolutely! And asked if I could give her a hug. It was obvious she still in startled from the ordeal. She just wrapped her arms around me and started crying on my shoulder. She was asked by the other employees if she was alright and she said, "Yeah, they are happy tears". The point I'm trying to get across is how important our testimonies are. How powerful each person’s story is and that they need to be told. If I hadn’t shared with Penny she wouldn’t have shared with me. Quite possibly she wouldn’t have shared with anybody. But in sharing, being vulnerable she truly felt the power of the presence of Holy Spirit. For the next 45 minutes she just wanted to touch me, because she could feel Jesus within me. She even told Kim when se he came and found us after we left the store she just didn’t want us to leave. That's the power within us when we walk with God. When we give in to His will and are courageous enough to speak when there are forces that will tell you to shut up. My Father says to share our testimonies, and I’m going to my testimony and courageously, meekly and humbly wield my sword until He calls me home.
I used 10,000+ to 12 as justification to share my testimony. To be totally honest, the numbers could be just the opposite, 12 for and 10,000+ against and I would still share because we are told to share in God's word. So, basically I share because Father told me to share and I feel an overwhelming feeling to share. I want others to know what I know, the greatness of God!

Below there are many verses that tell/compel us to share our testimonies. I borrowed the following information from Adornedinarmor.com
The Bible contains dozens of scriptures commanding us to thank God for all he does in our lives. There is nothing we can do to repay God, so our only response to His grace and work in our lives must be in His own love language–obedience. Telling others about what He has done in our life is a simple way to thank Him.
Tell people how wonderful God is.
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!
Psalm 96:3 ESV
If for no other reason, we should tell people about Jesus, so everyone knows what a wonderful God we serve.
Heal yourself and others.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
Proverbs 18:21 ESV
Stories have the power to literally heal us..
Make His faithfulness known.
For Sheol does not thank you; death does not praise you; those who go down to the pit do not hope for your faithfulness. The living, the living, he thanks you, as I do this day; the father makes known to the children your faithfulness.
Isaiah 38:18-19 ESV
Knowledge is power, so when people learn about our faithful God, they are empowered to choose His ways.
Make the Word memorable and practical.
And the Lord answered me:“Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.
Habakkuk 2:2 ESV
A published story is a reference, a lesson the audience can implement in their life. Our recorded stories in a digital age are markers, an archive of His redemptive work.
Soften a hard heart.
Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”11 And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.12 For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
Matthew 13:10-12 ESV
Stories prepare our heart to understand difficult ideas.
Transfer Values.
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.
Matthew 21:45 ESV
Stories carry values to teach the audience about right and wrong without a lecture. When Jesus told the parable of the wicked tenants, the Pharisees instinctively caught the moral lesson, and they perceived their casting role in the story as the wicked servant. The story transferred values and forced the audience to see their own wrong-doing. Pharisees became so enraged by a simple fiction story that they wanted to kill Jesus.
Work through and with the Holy Spirit.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Acts 1:8 ESV
Everyone in ministry longs to see more of the Holy Spirit moving in and through their lives, and testimony is one way to do that.
We won’t feel right unless we testify.
But Peter and John answered them,“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”
Acts 4:20 ESV
Every Spirit-led believer feels the nudge to testify, and we will always feel regret when we resist and disobey.
Transfer God’s grace.
And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
Acts 4:33 ESV
Stories about God’s goodness lift us up and strengthen us with the power to do with God what we can’t do on our own.
We are in disobedience when we don’t testify.
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, saying,“We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
Acts 5:27-32 ESV
Sharing testimony is a command of God, so when we stay silent, we are in disobedience.
Use your gifts.
So Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.”Then Paul stretched out his hand and made his defense:“I consider myself fortunate that it is before you, King Agrippa,I am going to make my defense today against all the accusations of the Jews, especially because you are familiar with all the customs and controversies of the Jews. Therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently.”
Acts 26:1-3 ESV
Have you ever left a birthday or Christmas gift unopened? Of course not. You rip it open to see what you will discover. And then, with anticipation, you consider how you will use the gift. The chance to share a testimony is also a gift, a blessing from God, for which we should all consider ourselves fortunate. God gives us the gift of a testimony so we can share it.
Testimony is the Holy Spirit’s job.
Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say,for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Matthew 10:17-20 ESV
Testifying to Jesus and helping us do the same is one of the primary functions of the Holy Spirit. As believers, we have the Holy Spirit in us, so it’s also our job to testify to God’s work and to submit to the Holy Spirit’s guidance in doing so. This means we should take any doubts or questions about testifying to the Holy Spirit in prayer.
Show other people how God wants us to live while giving the glory to Him where it belongs.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16 ESV
A story is evidence of how we live, so when our stories point to Jesus, we show others how to walk alongside Him, and how He is the reason for every good thing in our lives. Stories about God’s faithfulness show people that the only way to live is with an through Him.
Show people how amazing Jesus is.
And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolishow much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
Mark 5:20 ESV
Everyone needs to know how amazing Jesus is, so we need to show others with our stories, and then we can pray our audience does something with their new treasure.
Help people understand God’s mercy.
And he did not permit him but said to him,“Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you,and how he has had mercy on you.”
Mark 5:19 ESV
We all need mercy, and testimony is proof that God is always merciful to those with a sincere heart.
Jesus tells us to testify.
“Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.”And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
Luke 8:39 ESV
We need to testify because the Bible commands us to, over and over. As God’s children, we are called to obey.
Ignite a revival.
Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony,“He told me all that I ever did.”
John 4:39 ESV
From her testimony of a five-minute encounter with Jesus, the woman at the well made thousands of people believe in Him. One story can ignite a revival anywhere if the Spirit wills it.
Comfort those who relate.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV
God comforts us not only for our sake in the moment, but so that we can learn from the experience to help others. God’s comfort is meant to be shared. One way to share His comfort is through a story.
Testimony is part of our Christian armor.
Fight the good fight of the faith.Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:12 ESV
Your testimony is one way to fight the good fight of faith and take hold of eternal life for ourselves and others.
Testimony is loving apologetics.
“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you;yet do it with gentleness and respect.”
1 Peter 3:15 ESV
This verse tells us we don’t need a seminary degree to practice apologetics. Sharing stories of God’s goodness is a gentle, loving way to defend the faith and explain why we have such hope in Jesus.
Testimony about Jesus conquers evil.
And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
Revelation 12:11 ESV
This verse from the Book of Revelation is the banner scripture for Christian writers, and it applies to everyone who testifies to God’s work. Satan’s ultimate demise comes from testimony and Jesus’s sacrifice because when we offer a testimony to the Holy Spirit, He uses it to defeat evil.
Testimony of the past tells us what to expect in the future.
Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me,“You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus.Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Revelation 19:10 ESV
God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Unlike the stock market, Jesus’s past behavior is predictive of future results, which means we can have comfort in His love and courage in His grace. The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. What God has done in my life, He wants to do in your life as well.
